kluang - town in central johor
we visit kluang at least once a year. it is about one and a half hours' drive and we normally take the causeway route. lay bee had her early education in kluang. she studied at the convent (see picture) with lee chin, lee kian and loo joo. every time we are in kluang, we make it a point to visit lee chin's parents.
when loo joo got married to chee hong, we attended the wedding which was held in kluang.
kluang's main attraction is the coffee house located at the kluang railway station-really good coffee plus the house's specialty 'roti bakar'. as a matter of fact, no visitor to kluang should miss this local favourite that is available for breakfast between 7.00am and 12.00noon and for afternoon tea between 2.30pm and 6.00pm.
there's beef noodle (gu bak hoon) stall which we patronise. there are two stalls selling the same variety, one operates in the day and the other, at night but at different places. in fact, there is a third one but that stall is not in kluang, it is in a coffee shop in johor bahru, opposite the former cathay cinema. the one who operates the jb stall is the 2nd brother.
visitors who love outdoor activities such hiking or mountain climbing will find that kluang offers one of the best options to do just that. kluang also offers agrotourism in padang hijau, located at the 18km kluang-mersing highway, near the junction where the road leads to gunung berlumut. gunung berlumut is situated northeast of kluang. hikers can do climbing activities or exploring the rainforest in gunung berlumut. residents flock to this area on weekends and during the school holidays.
gunung lambak also attracts local folks who go there during weekends or in the evenings. it is the perfect place for picnicking, swimming and climbing since it is situated only 5km from the town centre.
